2mediumapples, peeled, cored, and diced (preferably Granny Smith)
1/2cupchopped walnuts (optional)
1tablespoonbutter (for greasing the dish)
to tastepowdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with the butter.
Tear the slices of bread into large chunks and layer them in the greased baking dish. Sprinkle the diced apples and walnuts evenly over the bread.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and apple layers, pressing down gently to ensure the bread absorbs the liquid.
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and let it sit for about 30 minutes at room temperature or pop it in the fridge if preparing ahead of time.
Bake covered for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden and the custard is set.
Allow it to cool slightly before slicing. Dust with powdered sugar just before serving.
Notes
Serve warm with a drizzle of additional maple syrup and a sprinkle of sliced fresh apples for garnish on top. Add a dollop of whipped cream if desired!
